FRC Housing

Dicon provided Pre-Construction, Design Assistance, and General Contracting Services for the conversion of two floors of the former Columbus Community Hospital into thirty-four affordable senior apartments in Columbus, Nebraska.

Scope of work included demolition of the original three-story hospital, constructed in 1879. The interior of the top two floors of the remaining structure were then demolished and reconfigured with steel beams and metal framing to house one and two-bedroom apartments.

The building is also home to several non-profit organizations, each of which remained operational throughout the duration of construction. Most notably, the Columbus Senior Center and Food Pantry were able to support the ongoing needs of the community throughout the Covid-19 Pandemic.

The project received state tax credits through the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority’s CRANE Program in addition to $1.5 million from the Nebraska Housing Trust Fund. Upon completion in 2022, FRC Housing was named the Innovative Project of the Year by NIFA.
